Sümela Monastery
A historic monastery built against a steep cliff in the forested mountains of Trabzon Province.
Sümela Monastery
Sümela Monastery is located in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in northeastern Turkey. The monastery stands high on a steep rock face above the Altındere Valley, surrounded by the dense forests and mountains of the Eastern Black Sea region.
Its location is one of its defining features. The buildings appear to cling to the cliff, with the complex positioned hundreds of metres above the valley floor.
The monastery developed over many centuries and became an important religious centre associated with the Greek Orthodox tradition.
The complex includes a rock church, chapels, living quarters, kitchens, guest areas, a library and other structures built into or against the mountain.
The Rock Church is the central part of the monastery. Its interior and exterior surfaces contain frescoes depicting religious scenes and figures.
The architecture is adapted closely to the natural setting. Narrow terraces, stone stairways and buildings occupy limited space between the rock face and the steep drop toward the valley.
From the monastery, the surrounding view extends across forested slopes and deep mountain terrain. Mist and cloud are common in the region and can significantly change the appearance of the landscape.
The Altındere Valley below is covered with dense vegetation typical of the Black Sea mountains, creating a strong contrast between the green natural environment and the stone monastery walls.
Sümela’s historic importance is closely connected with its religious use, but its architecture and location also make it a notable example of how buildings were adapted to difficult mountain environments.
The combination of painted interiors, stone structures, cliffside construction and forested surroundings gives Sümela Monastery a character very different from urban religious monuments elsewhere in Turkey.
